Welcome to the Grand Canyon Chapter
of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA)!

Train. Hunt. Bond. Join the Adventure!

At Grand Canyon NAVHDA, we’re all about dogs, hunting, and having a blast while training! Our chapter is a laid-back, supportive crew that helps you and your versatile hunting dog build skills in the field, water, and tracking—without the pressure of competition.

Think of it as a team sport with your dog as the MVP. Whether you’re brand new to training or a seasoned pro, we’re here to help you turn your pup into a confident, skilled, and enthusiastic hunting partner.

If you love the outdoors, good company, and watching your dog crush new challenges, then come hang with us! Let’s train, learn, and have fun along the way. See you on the field.

Training Weekend May 17-18 (Snake Avoidance Training on Saturday Only) - Flagstaff Location

We're kicking off our Flagstaff training season with a critical safety opportunity for you and your dog.

Join us Saturday, May 17 at 8:00 AM for Snake Avoidance Training led by Don Lietzau. This clinic is designed to help your dog recognize and avoid rattlesnakes using a proven method that engages sight, sound, and scent for maximum effectiveness.

Don was trained by Web Parton, who has successfully led snake avoidance clinics for us in the past. Don's group-based approach is highly effective—but also mentally taxing for your dog. Because of this, we recommend not training your dog further that day, so please plan to train on Sunday.

GCC Member Cost: $150 for a first dog | $100 for a second dog  (Payment by cash or check accepted on site.)

Spots are limited to 15 dogs, so early registration is encouraged! (Spots are filling up fast!)  ðŸ‘‰ To register, please contact Greg directly.

If you do not plan on attending the snake avoidance training, we will hold regular training both Saturday and Sunday. Members sign up for training weekend here. If you are new to the chapter and not yet a member, we would love to have you try us out, please let us know you are coming, by completing this form here. (pro tip: register for an account first to sign up!)

We Need Your Help!

To make our NAVHDA tests a success, we rely on volunteers from our chapter to assist with all aspects of testing—from setting up the field to handling birds and supporting judges. Whether you’re experienced or new to NAVHDA, volunteering is a great way to learn, connect, and be part of the action. If you are a member, please select what positions you can help with when you sign up for a training weekend or click the link below to see what is remaining for our upcoming test.

2025 GCC NAVHDA Test Entry Form

Are you ready to see what your dog is truly capable of? NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association) tests provide the ultimate challenge, evaluating dogs in field and water work. Unlike competitive trials, NAVHDA tests measure each dog against a set standard—every dog has the opportunity to shine and earn top honors. Dogs that meet or exceed the standards are awarded one of three prestigious rankings: Prize I, II, or III, with Prize I being the highest achievement.

NAVHDA Testing Levels:

Natural Ability (NA) Test
Designed for young dogs, this test assesses their raw, inherent talent and potential as versatile gun dogs. Each dog is evaluated on seven critical natural abilities: nose, search, tracking, pointing, water, desire, and cooperation. It’s the perfect first step to gauge your pup’s future hunting potential!

Gun Dog Test (GDT)
This test evaluates how well your dog is developing as a reliable hunting partner. It serves as a stepping stone toward advanced NAVHDA testing and ensures your dog is on track to becoming a highly skilled member of your hunting team.

Utility Test (UT)
A true test of a finished versatile hunting dog! The UT evaluates a dog’s performance in the field and water, both before and after the shot. Those who achieve Prize I in the Utility Test receive a prestigious invitation to the NAVHDA Invitational, where they can strive for the coveted Versatile Champion (VC) title—the highest honor in NAVHDA!
